How does it work?

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You must be at least 15 years old.

  • Must complete 30 hours of classroom driver’s ed and enroll in behind-the-wheel instruction (Minnesota requirement).

  • If you are 18 or older, classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction is not required.

  • Must pass a vision screening and permit knowledge test (Minnesota).

How does it work?

DRIVER REQUIREMENTS - MN ROAD TEST

In Minnesota, the road test requirements will vary depending on your age.

If you’re under 18:

  • At least 16 years old

  • Completion of 30 classroom hours of Minnesota driver’s ed

  • Held an instruction permit for at least six months

  • Completed the required 6 behind-the-wheel training hours

  • Maintain a violation-free driving record for six months

  • Completed 50 hours of supervised home driving, including 15 hours after dark, with a driving log

If you’re over 18:

  • Driver education is not required; you need only have held your instruction permit for three months.

SCHEDULING YOUR MINNESOTA DRIVING SKILLS TEST

To schedule your Minnesota road test, pre-apply online to save time at the DMV. Then book your appointment at a nearby exam station.

VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS

You’ll drive your own vehicle during the driving skills test. Your own vehicle must have valid registration and insurance. You’ll need to present proof at the driver licensing office.Before the test, your vehicle’s lights, seat belts, doors, and signals will be checked for safety.

Scheduling Your Permit or Road Test

Scheduling a permit or road test must be done online through the State of MN DVS website HERE. Then follow these steps to schedule:

-Answer: Have you ever had an instruction permit or license. Yes or no

-Enter: Required applicant information

-Click: Next

-Click: The exam station you wish to test at

-Click: Next

-Go to the calendar and select a date and time

-Confirm

**PLEASE NOTE: The exam station will not take phone calls, so scheduling must be done online.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE DAY OF YOUR WRITTEN PERMIT TEST

If you do not have the following documents with you on test day, you will not be allowed to take the written permit test. This is required for all applicants.

  • Blue card the student receives upon completing classroom instruction

  • Primary form of ID such as certified birth certificate, unexpired passport or MN ID card as well as your social security number

  • Secondary form of ID such as non laminated social security card or official school transcript with complete legal name

  • Fees: $15.50

  • A parent or guardian who is willing to sign/approve your license application.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE DAY OF YOUR ROAD TEST

If you do not have the following documents with you on test day, you will not be allowed to take the Minnesota road test. This is required for all applicants.

  • A valid instruction permit.

  • Their social security number.

  • A vehicle that is properly insured and registered and is working safely.

  • Proof of registration and insurance for your vehicle.

  • Licensing fees: Provisional License-$19.25 Regular Class D License-$32.00

    **Additionally, if you’re under the age of 18, you’ll need to bring:

  • Proof of driver education completion.

  • A completed and signed driving log.

  • If needed, proof of supplemental parental curriculum completion.

  • A parent or guardian who is willing to sign/approve your license application.

    New Driver’s License System Offers Pre-Application Feature

Minnesota’s new pre-application system lets users input much of their driver’s license or ID application online—greatly reducing DMV wait times. We highly recommend using it before your permit or license appointment.
